Brief on Custom Signet Rings Part Three

Posted in Uncategorized on 30.09.10 by Merlyn

There are 3 methods to making a signet ring and they include hand-engraving, wax carving, and 3D CAD design. Hand engraving is how signet rings were made many years ago. This involves taking the ring and using a process called chasing to create the pattern in the gold or platinum. The jeweler uses a small tool called a graver and proceeds to carve the pattern much like a sculptor. Benefits to the process include definition, detail and lustre. When precious metal is hand-carved it also becomes bright cut or diamond cut in its appearance, this is what creates the lustre. Wax carving is when a jeweler takes a cube of wax and whittles the material away until the ring and the carving are remaining. Once the wax is completed a mould is made of the wax and then the precious metals are injected into the mould.

Benefits to wax carving are mostly cost savings as this is the most time saving of all processes. 3D-cad is when a craftsman uses computer aided design software to create a model which is then sent to a CNC mill or prototyping machine to create prototype for casting. The benefit of 3D-CAD is that it provides the fine detail of the work and also designs the capability. CAD software allows the user to create anything the mind can dream up.

Brief on Custom Signet Rings Part Two

After creating the extrusion you can have a recessed area to receive the crest. This recessed area will keep the crest centred on the ring and it will also accentuate the shape of the crest.
The other process for creating the crest is to recess the design or carve the image into the ring. The will create what is called relief work and make it look like it was hand-engraved. Having the crest carved in the ring will give it an authentic feel much like signet rings from many years ago.

The next thing for you to decide is what shape the signet ring will be. There are several shapes available and the most popular are square, oval, cushion, octagon, and round. The shape that you choose should be based on the shape of your family crest. You will want to choose a ring shape that best matches the outside perimeter of the image. The main purpose for this is to prevent dead or unused space surrounding your crest. The other thing that you should consider putting in your setting is a comfort fit, especially if you are not used to wearing jewellery. This will make your ring easier to wear while providing a soft feel on the inside of it.

Men’s Ring Styles

Posted in Uncategorized on 30.09.10 by Merlyn

When it comes to rings, traditionally the jewelry market has aimed promotions and marketing toward women’s rings. However, men have become part of the new consumer base, buying rings for daily wear and for special occasions. Because of this, many jewelry retailers now offer a diverse grouping of men’s ring styles.

Men are no longer relegated to a simple white, gold or platinum wedding band. As women have expanded to more elaborate wedding bands, men have also. Today’s men’s wedding bands can be diamond encrusted, consisting of several smaller diamonds lining a platinum band. Or men can choose from a signet-style band, with a larger stone, such as an opal or even a diamond, and three or four smaller diamonds running on either side of the larger stone.

Signet rings have long represented style and sophistication for men. Generally made with gold or sterling silver setting, signet ring tops are meant to be engraved, and most men use this to showcase the family crest or their initials. You can include a stone of your choosing along with whatever inscription you choose for the top of the ring. Shapes of the signet ring top include oval, round or square. The banding on this ring can also be engraved to match the inscription on the top, making this an optimal men’s gift option.

Signet Rings Protocol Part Two

Posted in Uncategorized on 30.09.10 by Merlyn

The etiquette of wearing signet rings varies around the world. In Belgium, men and women both wear signet rings upon the little finger of their left hand; however, in England and Ireland, it is only men who do so. In Switzerland, men wear signet rings upon the ring finger of their right hand, while in France, men use the ring finger of their left hand, and women use the little finger of their left hand.

Whether or not a signet ring conveys nobility, or even royalty, it can still have significance today. Etiquette governing signet rings in the United States is far from strict–it is usual for the ring to be worn on the little finger of whichever hand is used least, for both men and women–but a ring can still be sign of family, nobility and loyalty. It is even possible to revert to the customs of Ancient Rome and use the ring to display not a family crest but an individual’s personality.

In certain situations, it is important to know the correct etiquette concerning signet rings. Not to do so, unless the pope initiates a handshake, is a sign of grave disrespect. Strict protocol also suggests that it is necessary to kiss the signet rings of certain members of European nobility on being introduced, but this has largely fallen out of practice.

Signet Rings Protocol Part One

Posted in Uncategorized on 30.09.10 by Merlyn

Unlike earlier times signet rings are no longer restricted to those belonging from noble family or a coat of arms; anyone can wear a signet ring if they want to. However, there are still various rules of protocol than can be observed, such as which finger to wear the ring upon or what to display upon your ring. Signet rings still have a significance and symbolism today.

Signet rings were once used as a sign of personal identity. The ring would bear a family crest or coat of arms, and the bearer could stamp the ring upon hot wax to sign a document or seal a letter — producing a “signature.” Today, signet rings are no longer used for this purpose, but they can still convey identity. Often bearing a coat of arms or the crest of a clan, signet rings are a sign of family history and tradition.

Signet rings originated in ancient Rome. The etiquette governing these rings used to dictate that finger rings could be worn only by those of a certain rank, and a signet ring must be removed from the wearer’s finger upon his death. It was considered bad taste to wear more than one ring. Signet rings could depict an individual’s personality rather than their family.
